big thanks to those members who helped to make this a memorable event
for our visitors.
This is my last message to you as

have done it without the help of my fellow board members. Thanks to
all of you who showed your support and confidence in us.
I hope to see a lot of you at the
meeting on the 22nd where we will be installing your new
officers for 2007-2009.

CARTERET COUNTY DEMOCRATIC
WOMEN
April 24, 2007
The
Carteret County Democratic Women met at Mrs. Willis’ Restaurant at 5:30
p.m. on April 24, 2007, with 18 present.
President Joyce Smith called
the meeting to order. Louise Rulon, 2nd Vice President, gave
the invocation and Nicki Hooper, 1st Vice President, led the
Pledge of Allegiance.
President Smith recognized
Buck Wilde, newly elected Chairman of the Carteret County Democratic
Party. President Smith called on Mr. Wilde for comments. Mr. Wilde
stated the Party has a pretty aggressive agenda, fund raising and
recruiting speakers for the 2nd Saturday Democratic Party
Breakfasts. It was reported that Joyce Smith was elected 1st
Vice-President of the Carteret County Democratic Party.
President Smith asked if
there were any corrections to the minutes of March 27, 2007 as printed
in the April
Bridge Builder.
There were no corrections. Minutes were accepted as printed. Louise
Rulon called attention to a correction in the newsletter. She stated
the Democratic Women meet on the Fourth Thursday and it should read 4th
Tuesday.
President Smith called on
LaVera Ellison, Treasurer, for her report. Ms. Ellison reported there
were 26 paid members. She reported a balance of $1,462.34 as of March
22, 2007. Receipts totaled $249.36 and disbursements totaled $78
leaving a balance of $1,633.70 as of April 21, 2007.
President Smith asked
Chairman Wilde to contact Darlene Leonard and Melanie Arthur and ask
them to be present at the 3rd District NCDW Annual Meeting at
Mrs. Willis’ Restaurant on May 5, 2007. Chairman Wilde said he would
and that he and Wade Nelms plan to be present.
A sign-up sheet was passed
around for those working at the convention. President Smith reminded
members to get things for our Chinese Auction to Nicki Hooper or bring
them to the 3rd District meeting. She reminded members this
was an easy way to raise money. She told Nicki and Irv Hooper they
would need plastic cups to put in front of items for sale and a roll of
double tickets. Ms. Hooper showed some cards that Mr. Hooper had
created on the computer of some of his prints. President Smith assured
them they would sell well. About 30 people are expected to attend.
Anne Clarke, member of the
Nominating Committee, presented the slate of officers for 2007-2009.
They were Andra Pond, President; Louise Rulon, 1st Vice President; Tina
Rodriguez, 2nd Vice-President; Mary Sue Noe, 3rd
Vice-President; Anne Clarke, Secretary; LaVera Ellison, Treasurer; and
Joyce Smith, Historian. Tibbie Roberts made a motion to elect the
Slate of Officers for 2007-2009 presented by the Nominations Committee
by acclamation. Ms. Hooper seconded the motion. The motion carried.
President Smith announced
that Louise Rulon was nominated as “Volunteer of the Year” by CCWRC and
she received the award.
Ms. Rulon reported on a trip
sponsored by the CCWRC to Branson, Missouri on September 15-23, 2007.
Information on this trip was printed in this month’s issue of the
Bridge Builder.
Tina Rodriguez announced the
CCWRC was sponsoring a free seminar by Cecil Harvell on Legal Advice at
1:30 p.m. on May 3, 2007 in the Bryant Student Center at Carteret
Community College.
Ms. Rulon introduced our
speaker, Caroline Farmer, Special Council for the N.C. Attorney
General’s Office. Ms. Farmer passed out information on Protecting
Your Good Name and Freeze Access to Your Credit. She informed
members of ways they could protect themselves from identity theft, the
importance of checking your credit report, personal information you
should never give out on line or to people on the phone, and how to
place a security freeze that keeps new creditors from accessing your
credit report without your say so. She gave us telephone numbers to call
to stop pre-approved credit card applications coming through the mail
and telemarketers from calling you.
With no further business,
the meeting adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Daphne Faircloth, Secretary

3rd
District DWNC Annual Conference
The 3rd
District DWNC Annual Meeting was a great success. The visitors to our
county had a great time and enjoyed the festivities of the day.
We
could not have pulled it off without all of the support from Mrs.
Willis’ Restaurant. The meals were wonderful and Jamie Willis Ballou
and her crew went out of their way to make this a grand event.
Those
of you who were unable to attend missed a truly good time. Our Party
Chairman Buck Wilde attended and noted his appreciation of work of the
Democratic Women, both local, district, and state.
Andra
Pond took a bad spill while we were trying to clean up after everyone
left. The Rescue Squad was called and they checked her out. She
refused to go to the hospital and the EMT’s felt that she had not broken
anything so she would probably just be really sore. We were all really
frightened for her and wanted to take her home but being the true
trooper she is she went back to work cleaning up after catching her
breath and receiving band aid treatment.
We
raised $160 from the Chinese Auction thanks to all of you who so
generously donated items for this event.

Irv Hooper sells Chinese Auction tickets to the
DWNC President, Barbara Faison while other members meet and chat.

Delores Kennedy, 3rd District DWNC
Director, led the annual meeting.

Congressional candidate, Marshall Adame, spoke at
the meeting. He will be running against Walter Jones, Jr.
